Time Series Graphical Display
|
Data shown here are measured by an Airmar weather station on the roof of Alphecca System's office, and acquired in real time to the ARTEMeS server using a small industrial microcontroller with an Ethernet connection.
Most environmental parameters vary with time; often the change in the value of a measurement is as important
as the value itself.
Most real-time display systems provide time series graphs of the measured parameter, usually in the form of a
simple image. With ARTEMeS, however, the time series graphs are extremely flexible and allow a considerable degree of user interaction.
The Time Series Display below uses the meta data associated with measurements to automatically annotate, scale and select appropriate axis types. For example, the graph of wind speed and direction shown below uses different types of axis, since speed and direction are fundamentally different in a mathematical sense.
Metadata can be delivered in diverse languages and in alternative character sets. This means that different users can see the same data in different languages. No other system offers this degree of flexibility.
Interactive display features
Visitors with Java installed may access a full interactive version of the display by clicking on the link above.
This will load and execute a JNLP (Web Start) application of the Time Series Display that demonstrates the full interactivity available to ARTEMeS users.
- The trace descriptions at the top left bring up the full data descriptions for each parameter
- Alternative units (eg knots instead of m/s for wind speed) may be selected from the full data description panel
- Double-clicking each parameter axis allows the scale to be adjusted.
Note that the direction and speed scales exhibit different behaviour as their values are mathematically distinct. - Each plotted point brings up the TimeSeries Point Inspector, allowing the exact value to be read. If the parameter was referenced as a Data Group member, then all the related parameter values are shown.
- Within the Point Inspector it is possible to quickly scroll through the entire data set, reading the values of all the associated measurements.
