What is Alphecca?

Alphecca is the brightest star in the constellation Corona Borealis, or Northern Crown.
It is this constellation that forms the basis of Alphecca Systems' logo.

Alphecca itself is a magnitude 2.3 variable star at approximate position RA 15h 35m, Decl. +26 42', where it is visible almost overhead during summer evenings from mid-latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere.

The name Alphecca, like that of many other stars, is derived from the Arabic language. It describes a circle or "crown". Other sources link the name to the phrase "Al Na'ir al Fakkah", meaning "Bright one on the dish".

The star has an alternative name, Gemma, which is related to the English word "gem".
